Prolonged sitting is not as bad as smoking but it is still harmful

The phrase “sitting is the new smoking” has been around for the last few years.  This week a study was published stating that smoking is a much bigger problem than prolonged sitting.  The researchers found that smokers risk the development of medical problems and an early death far more so than those sitting for long periods. However, the study authors have acknowledged that sedentary behaviour increases the risk of a premature death and the development of chronic diseases by up to 20%.  Which is a pretty high statistic considering that it is often avoidable. Oil and gas industry medicals – EBS explained

If you work for the UK Oil and Gas industry then you’ve probably heard the acronym EBS in the last few months, before you end up incorrectly guessing what those letters might stand for Hobson Health is going to tell you everything you need to know. EBS stands for Emergency Breathing System and if you’re going to be travelling by helicopter to an offshore OGUK installation then they’ll be one attached to your life jacket. It’s a small air cylinder, attached by tubing to a mouth piece and is there to supply you with air should an emergency evacuation of the aircraft be required. This week Prince William spoke about the impact of witnessing pain first-hand as an air ambulance pilot, admitting that he, “took a lot home without realising it”. His comments came as he launched the Mental Health at Work project. The project couldn’t have come at a better time as it appears that The Duke of Cambridge is not alone, with a survey from the charity Mind finding that half of workers had experienced poor mental health in their current job. The survey of 44,000 workers also found that staff who were supported by their manager felt better able to discuss their mental health in the workplace.
